Allergic reactions can be difficult to deal with primarily owing to the fact that any adverse pharmacological response cannot be allergic. For a particular response of the body to be allergic in nature, it should occur in similar pattern on exposure to similar (or same) kind of allergen and should withdraw itself after a particular point of time on the withdrawal of the allergen. The second important issue while diagnosing allergy is determining the exact cause or the exact trigger of the allergic reaction in the body. In day to day life every individual comes across many chemicals and foreign particles right from ceramics, paints, Pollen, dust and smoke etc. Out of all the substances that one comes across, finding out the exact cause of the allergy is a tough job. It becomes particularly difficult when a food allergy is to be diagnosed, as it requires determining the exact food item that brings about the allergic response in the body.

A person generally approaches a physician with the symptoms such as suffering with conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, migraine, skin complaints, mood swings, chronic fatigue etc. Merely looking at the symptoms the maximum one can determine is whether the reactions are allergic or not. It takes a series of tests and other analytical procedures to determine the exact cause of the allergy in any individual. And other than these tests the physician also needs to go through and understand the patient history, the type of food habit he/she has, the type of eating or diet schedule he/she follows, what do they have or have had (specially in the last 48-60 hours). This is because not all the allergic reactions occur rapidly (as soon as the exposure to the allergen is made). Some of the symptoms may take as much as a couple of days to appear completely. Tracing the patient history and closely analyzing it would help the physician shortlist the possible allergens. For the physician to be sure about the allergen, he/she would have to perform a series of tests and analysis. The analysis becomes all the more challenging incase of children because an adult can tell you what he/she has had or done in the last 48 hours but a child cannot.

Not only this, is case of food allergies (where the allergic reaction has occurred due to some food item) it is also important for the physician to clearly understand the difference between allergy and intolerance and also diagnose if the given patient with the appearing symptoms is suffering from food allergy or food intolerance. Once this is determined only then the physician can advice some treatment for the patient. A particular type of food intolerance can easily be treated by withdrawing that particular food item from the diet chart completely for a while, whereas the allergic reaction would require some other procedure to be followed.

Hence, it is important that a person suffering from any such allergic or intolerance symptoms approaches the right type of physician for the diagnosis and treatment of the same.
