There are many different food allergies that can make life difficult and somewhat less diverse in taste, but some of these are far more common than others. Among these slightly more regular food allergies is lactose intolerance – an intolerance for milk and other dairy products – and this is not only a very common allergy but also a very invasive allergy that can make life difficult.

The reason for this is that milk and dairy products are in a lot of different food products and recipes. There are many things that we add milk too in particular and this means that we have to be careful making tea and coffee, and having milk on our cereal. Most people will just assume that you take milk and if you ask for tea they will automatically add milk to it. Make sure that everyone knows beforehand that you have a lacto-intolerance and they will make sure to avoid adding the milk next time.

Luckily when it comes to adding milk to your coffee or your cereal there is a very simple alternative which is to use soy milk. Soy milk is made from soy bean which is a very bioavailable source of protein that many vegetarians rely on. This can be turned into a tasty milk that has many of the same benefits as cow's milk and some additional ones. If you are someone who likes to add milk regularly to their cereal then you can get a soy milk maker of your own and this way you can make it cheaply using a supply of the beans. You can also take this with you if you are going to stay at a friend's home for a few nights – but it can be bought in most stores cheaply. Of course you will also need to avoid cheese, butter and milk chocolate.

If you do have this food sensitivity then you need to make sure though that you still get as much calcium. Calcium exists in cows milk in high quantities and that is most people's main source. To make sure you get enough you can take a supplement or eat lots of green vegetables – failure to do so can result in osteoporosis (you should also increase your intake of vitamin B6 which will help with your absorption of calcium so that your body can use it more efficiently).

At the same time though you can also find that milk is used in a lot of other things though. If you have any food intolerance then it is very important to make sure that you always read the ingredients of any foods you should eat to ensure that they are safe for you to consume. Likewise many people use milk in their cooking, so if you are at a friend's make sure that they know about your condition, and if you are in a restaurant then be sure to ask the chef if they have used milk in the different options.
