Food allergies can seem like a serious blight and one that could potentially stand in the way of having a normal and happy life if the symptoms of food allergies are bad enough and if the food intolerance is for something that you eat regularly. Alternatively they may seem just like a minor annoyance and one that stops you from enjoying your favorite cake or your favorite meal and it is certainly not something you would wish for. Commonly experiencing the symptoms of food allergies is no fun either and means that you will have to put up with breathing difficulties, with nasty headaches or with rashes on a regular basis which can be unpleasant and even in some cases embarrassing (it's also quite embarrassing having to turn down a perfectly nice meal that someone has cooked for you).
Thus if you find you have a food intolerance, something will need to be done and you will need to find a way that you can overcome it and avoid the food allergy symptoms. There are many things you can do and many courses of action you can take. Here are just some.
Avoid the Food: Sometimes simply avoiding the food is the best way to avoid food allergies. This can be easy in some cases – if you're allergic to strawberries (relatively common) then you can simply avoid eating strawberries and anything that is strawberry flavored. However if your allergy is to something more common or something that is used in a lot of recipes this can be a lot more difficult – for instance an allergy to nuts means avoiding many chocolate bars, many meals and a lot of other things too and can be quite hard, while a lactose intolerance rules out many different types of food. To do this properly you will need to do a lot of research and find precisely what it is that people with your allergy can and cannot eat. At the same time you should always read the ingredients on anything you buy and you should ask anyone who cooks for you what they put into the meal. Make sure you also consider how you are going to ensure you get all the nutrients you need in your diet when you are avoiding such a large part of it. For a lactose intolerant individual for instance you will need to get another source of calcium to keep your bones strong.
Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy involves gradually introducing larger and larger quantities of the allergen into the blood of the individual. What this does is to teach their body not ro react to it as a toxin and not to create an allergic reaction to try and drive it out of your system. Symptoms of allergies are not caused by the allergens themselves, but rather by the body's own reaction to those chemicals, and so this can help a lot.
Medication: Likewise on a more temporary basis it is possible to subdue this immune response with medication and this can allow you to treat the symptoms of your food intolerance when they crop up. If the food is something you like a lot, and if the symptoms are not too severe, then you may wish to have the food item anyway and then to treat the problems when they arise.
